Threads of Tradition: Indonesian and Chinese Garb Amidst a Board Game Backdrop

This painting presents the rich tapestry of diversity in Indonesian and Chinese cultures, combining the symbols and elements that celebrate this unique heritage. I used a unique and new painting technique to paint the temple (Candi Borobudur) to create the textured look of the building. My artwork allows audiences to study the beauty of cultural diversity and the connections that tie them together.

Whispers of Ancient Wood: Chinese Hardwood Murals

I wanted to capture the strengths that Chinese people have endured and this artwork honours the resilience of Chinese culture that most people overlook their challenges. I show this by displaying the murals of how Chinese people washed their clothes and cooked their meals in the past. My sculpture allows the audience to be reminded of the enduring legacy of Chinese hardwood.

Ants Across Borders: Indonesian and Chinese Cultural Cuisine

In this painting, I present different dishes of Chinese and Indonesian cuisines, showing the different flavours and cultures through them. Each one of these dishes on the table shows the traditions that they usually eat on different cultural occasions. The ants around these dishes represent the Indonesian (ants with hats) and Chinese, symbolising the connection and diversity between the two cultures. This painting allows the audience to analyse the richness of diversity.

Behind Closed Doors: Perspectives on Chinese Culture

Perspectives of how people view the Chinese culture. At the forefront, the events represent how other people view them such as that they have squinted eyes, are good at math, etc. while inside the round door, it represents how Chinese people are which is characterised by their diverse nature. These different perspectives are influenced and shaped by personal experiences, biases, etc. Through this sculpture, I hope to convey the importance of seeking depth from various perspectives.

Each instruments around the heart reflect the Indonesian musical tradition such as the kendang, angklung, etc. This painting reminds us of the importance of preserving the cultural heritage and roots.

Botanical Harmony: Lotus, Durian, and Indonesian Wildlife

This painting delves into the interaction between nature and cultures. The durian is a fruit originating from Indonesia, which signifies the wealth and success valued in both cultures. Komodos on each side of the painting show as a shield or protection of the two cultures and mutual respect of the cultures. This allows the audience to contemplate how when cultures meet together they connect like the roots of the forest.

Traditions Entwined: Indonesian and Chinese Festivals

This painting captures the beauty of diversity between Indonesian culture (on the right) and Chinese culture (on the left). China is represented by the Chinese New Year festival and Indonesia by the Odalan festival (village temple festivals). I am Chinese-Indonesian, and I want audiences to see the beauty and complexity of diversity and that we have to accept differences between cultures to understand them better.  (The men in the centre are carrying a stack of food and fruits)

Enlightened Threads

This painting is to encapsulate the mutual relationship that Chinese and Indonesian cultures have. The focal point of the painting stands a Buddha which creates a sense of peace of cultural boundaries. The batik motif is a textile tradition of Indonesia, radiating the creativity that has developed throughout the generations. The architecture above the painting represents Indonesian traditional architecture. It reminds the audience to embrace diversity and celebrate the beauty of differences.
